Live From the Underground: Giving K.R.I.T. His Flowers 👑💐〽

You know… there’s artists that you might listen to in passing. You never really connect with their music on a different level. It’s just a nice beat and a catchy chorus. Shit you’d play on a ratchet night with the homies (nothing wrong with that). Then, there’s artists that end up becoming a part of the soundtrack to your life. For me? Big K.R.IT has been the latter.

I’ve written before about how his music met me during one of the darkest periods of my life. About the songs that gave language and understanding to my fears, depression, generational weight, and the very complicated reality of being Black in America. But this weekend, standing in a crowd full of people screaming every word back at him, I found myself thinking about how I was participating in something bigger than the music.

In an industry obsessed with trends, going viral, whatever is hot for fifteen minutes, and whatever will get them a quick check — K.R.I.T. has spent over a decade doing something that’s much harder when you’re in this game… and that’s staying true to himself.

I’ve watched some of my favorite rappers go down roads I’d never thought they’d go down. Some might say they’re evolving or “keeping up with what’s hot”. To each their own. I have different opinions, but this ain’t about them.

Meanwhile, K.R.I.T. been out here storytelling. Never forgetting where he came from. Keeping his sound and his energy filled with that southern soul you wont find just around the corner. Whether its a song you have to sit with and replay again because you were floored by the depth, or a hype song for the ride to work — K.R.I.T. always delivers. Not only does he deliver, he stays cohesive in his projects. Something my husband brought up the other day and I had to agree. His projects have never been just a bunch of songs thrown together — they’re stories. It all comes together the way he intends for it to… and to me that’s real artistry. But that’s a whole other blog post.

Seeing him live again was everything I could’ve asked for in a concert.

My favorite rapper, in my favorite city, with my favorite person in the world standing behind me all happening at one time. Ya girl was going through it emotionally, okay!?

But man, the amount of electricity in the room when he came on stage could’ve blown a transformer to smithereens. I mean, I don’t even know how long he was up there because time just wasn’t a factor. But for a moment… we weren’t in New Orleans anymore.

We were in Cadillactica (iykyk).

It was like all of us were in his space ship together and nothing else mattered. Not bills, not stress, not the weight of life. We were all just time traveling in K.R.I.T.’s world… visiting his rooms and bumping some of his tracks from back in the day and the newer ones… letting the bass guide us to our next destination.

And I swear the louder it got in that spaceship, the deeper the energy was felt. I can still feel the bass rumbling underneath my feet.

Being a part of his world, even if it was just for an hour was euphoric.

The electricity that’s felt when he’s on stage isn’t just from the bass and the lyrics, but it also comes from his humble spirit and authenticity. You can’t buy that type of originality. You can’t fake that type of genuine presence. When an artist continues to stay true to themselves no matter what, that shit deserves to be celebrated.

So it’s never just a concert with K.R.I.T.; it's a celebration of knowing that he chose to stay true to himself and walk his own path. It’s a vibration of higher energies and souls coming together to experience something dare I say… out of this world.

It’s only right to continue to give K.R.I.T. his flowers for his amazing talent and his allegiance to himself. He is one of the greatest to EVER do it and I stand by that.

Years ago, K.R.I.T.'s music met me in the dark. This weekend, during one of the happiest chapters of my life, I stood in a room full of people celebrating that same artist. Life has a funny way of bringing things full circle.

What a great way to kick off my decade in my 30s.

Thank you, K.R.I.T. <3

I also have to give a hugeeee shoutout to DJ Dusei! If ya’ll don’t know him, you better get comfortable! He is an Atlanta-based DJ and K.R.I.T.’s official DJ. And let me just say he shuts the stage down every single time. It’s not just K.R.I.T. up there. Watching them feed off of each other energetically was an experience in itself. They make a great team and I’m happy that I also got to meet Dusei in person too finally!

Back in 2022, he was the first person to say yes to me when I decided to interview 12 different artist for my website at the time and I’m forever grateful for that. It gave me the courage to ask the next person and then the next.

It’s been four years since I interviewed him, but I’m going to drop the link anyway so ya’ll can go check it out if you missed it.

So if you’re in Atlanta, keep an eye out for ways to support him — DJ Dusei Da Great , on social media platforms.

Now I know some of you reading have listened to my husband’s Big K.R.I.T. tribute song. I posted it here a few months back. However, of course I’m going to link it again!

This man has always amazed me with his beautiful spirit and talent. He’s so musically inclined and I adore that about him. Me, him and music go together realllll bad and us both being huge K.R.I.T. fans made it all the better. We were definitely vibrating on a higher plane together Sunday night. He got to meet K.R.I.T. as well and I was over the moon watching them chop it up about music for a quick second.

He told me that K.R.I.T. was one of the artists that got him through high school — and now here he is past 30 years old and still a fan, rapping every lyric.

This song he made is one of many by him that I listen to regularly.

So please, go support him! Run those views up. <3

Finally, if you have yet to read the blog post I was referring to — I’ll link it here!

Tired of Today, Forever Scared of Tomorrow
Children of the World was the song that made me a fan. And from that day, K.R.I.T has had a daily run in my playlist.

If you made it this far, I appreciate you taking the time to read, click links, and support my people!

Let’s continue to support each other.

Talk to y’all again soon.
