Are You Living in Your True Whimsy?

So I’ve been seeing the word “whimsy” floating around more and more and I’m honestly here for it.

I made an appreciation post yesterday about Andre 3000 and his whimsy. It was just a small thread with pictures of him being all whimsical and shit.

I then went on to just mention how I love seeing Black people embrace their whimsy. For a long time, being Black and whimsical was labeled as other things, especially by people in our own community.

Being different meant you were outcasted — pun intended.

But as times has progressed, and Black people are saying fuck it and doing what they wanna do, I’ve seen more and more Black men and women embracing their whimsical side.

David Larbi is a writer on this app whose whimsy inspires me. I’ve been seeing his life poems posts recently where he makes poems out of his little life adventures and adds pictures. He’s just so happy to be alive & takes pleasures in the little things. It’s so beautiful.

& tifanei just threw a fairy themed birthday party for herself at the age of 38. The pictures were so adorable!!! It was all so cute and whimsical like yes!!!

Black people, add some color and whimsy to your life — please! We do not need permission to be happy, different, and colorful.

You think Andre gave a fuck about people talking shit about his colorful wardrobe and style? Absolutely not. You think he gave a rats ass about people being mad that he put out an entire flute album instead of a rap album? No sir. He didn’t. He just lives his life doing what he wants and a lot of that includes being a whimsical ass mf.

So I encourage you, to live in your true whimsy.

Most of us are artists, creators, lovers, thinkers, musicians, dreamers, writers.

The world asks us to be practical all the time. Productive, efficient, serious, and to fit into a certain aesthetic or lifestyle that they’ve carved out in their heads for us. But most of us weren’t built that way. Most of us are dreamers first before we were anything else.

That inner child is screaming to have a seat at the damn table because growing up, a lot of us didn’t have a voice or a say so. A lot of us were robbed of our whimsy and self-expression.

It’s time we take back our freedom to be BLACK & whimsical.

This was your sign to embrace your inner whimsy and unlock the part of you that you hide because you’re afraid of what people might say.

Now, go add some color to your life!
