The Nostalgia Epidemic — Missing the World That Used to Be

The Sunday Chronicle 📰✨

Good morning, friends! It’s a new week and new opportunities are upon us. I hope you took some time to wind down last week, spent time with your journal, and cleared you calendar just a smidge.

Don’t forget to continue practicing winding down for the year and making sure you are taking care of yourself mentally.

Alright, grab your coffee and lets chat for a bit. This is for the people who are feeling nostalgic lately… if it don’t apply let it fly.

📰 The Sunday Brew

I’ve been a nostalgia junkie for a while now. Remembering what life used to be like when things were simpler. When people cared more. When activities and certain acts were done because it was fun — or simply because it was on your heart to do. Not because it was trendy or a way to become a viral sensation.

I miss cable TV. I miss VHS tapes and DVD players. I miss MySpace. I miss the world before the internet got to where it is now. It’s hard to explain, but I think you know exactly where I’m going with this. I miss not feeling like I was always “missing out” on something. Although, I’ve started to retrain my mind when it comes to that. I’ve slowed down on feeling like I’m missing out. I actually purposely miss out on things because I don’t want to be in the loop.

The funny thing is, recently I’ve been seeing people on social media feeling just like me. I’ve always been called “an old soul.” I’ve always yearned for something older… old routines, old music, old life. And actually, not to my surprise, other people are yearning for the old life too. The reason it isn’t surprising to me is because who in their right mind loves the way the world is right now? Seriously. I think some people handle it better than others. But most people? They don’t enjoy life right now.

Inflation. The government. The lies. The modernized buildings that used to have character. The color that has been drained from most businesses and replaced with dark greys and sterile white. The fact that people literally post every single aspect of their personal lives online, and we know way too much about these people and their personal lives. It’s too much. People used to go online to escape their realities — now they spend more time in their reality to escape being online.

How crazy is it that unplugging, digital detoxing, removing yourself from social media for a while, or turning off devices and spending time with your thoughts and in nature is something that you have to practice. You know? We are that plugged into the online world that sometimes we forget to be present in the actual world.

Because of all this, people are craving a slower way of life. I’ve seen videos of people buying CRT TVs and thrifting old VHS tapes. Switching to flip phones. Paper planning again instead of relying on their computer or phone to hold their plans. I see people yearning to get back to a simpler life. The internet was supposed to make things easier. How ironic that getting offline or even going back to the basics would be the “simpler” way of doing things.

This isn’t a shot at anyone who loves the modern way of living at all. It’s just an observation.

I think the real issue is the state of the world now — that makes us want to go back in time more than ever. And that’s okay.

So if you’ve been finding yourself craving a simpler life — paper over digital, DVDs over streaming, nature sounds and no headphones during your daily walks, French presses instead of Keurigs, digital detox days, and libraries with old books — you are not alone.

I myself have been rewatching old early 2000s shows — The Practice, The Shield, The Wire, One Tree Hill, Gilmore Girls. I’ve been submerged in the early 2000s for a few weeks and I don’t want to bring my head up for air, LOL. I want to live in it because I miss it! Maybe that sounds crazy. Maybe I need therapy. But guess what? This is actually my life and I can do whatever the fuck I want… that’s the beauty of not caring about how you sound to other people. 😂

Maybe this week, you find yourself unplugging for a day or two. Journaling about why or what it is that’s calling you to want to go back to the old way of life. Maybe find the root of it so that you can fix it. Is it because you spend too much time online? Maybe it’s time to limit your daily interactions with the online world. Is it something deeper than that? I wouldn’t know… but it doesn’t hurt to figure out why, so that you can curate the life that brings you the utmost comfort.

Life is too short to be miserable. If nostalgia is what you’re craving, you can create it in your real life — your personal space. You can bring it back.

☕️ The Sunday Sip: The Memory Roast

This week, we’re brewing something warm — a cup filled with memories, slower mornings, and the comfort of familiar things. The kind of roast that smells like Sunday cartoons, long car rides with the radio playing, and handwritten notes tucked in the shoeboxes you keep at the top of your closet.

Nostalgia’s been hitting heavy lately, hasn’t it? Not in a sad way — but in a soul craving something real kind of way. We’re all reaching for something softer, something slower, something that reminds us of when the world felt a little smaller and a lot more human… I know I am.

Maybe you’ve been feeling it too — the urge to unplug, to dust off an old DVD, to light a candle that smells like your childhood home. Maybe you’ve caught yourself missing the sound of a simpler life. That’s okay. It’s not regression… it’s just remembrance in a way.

Sometimes nostalgia isn’t asking you to go back but its asking you to come back to who you are.

Journal Prompt:

What’s one part of your past that still brings you comfort — and how can you bring a piece of that feeling into your life right now?

Let this be the week you rebuild that softness. Put your phone down for an hour. Play that old song. Write instead of scroll. The comfort you’re craving? It’s still here — it just needs your permission to exist in your world again.

📝 The Margin Notes

Write these in your planner, phone notes, or on the back of your grocery list:

  • “The world got louder so I learned to find peace in the quiet.”
  • “Nostalgia is about remembering who you were before the noise.”
  • “You don’t have to chase the pace of the world. You can choose a slower lifestyle.”
  • “Softness is still a revolution. And it will be televised.”
  • “Recreate the comfort you’re seeking… don’t just think about it.”
  • “You can live a life worth missing while still being fully here.”
